Scotti Sentes Named MAC Wrestler of the Week

MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan senior 133-pounder Scotti Sentes has been named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Thursday.

Sentes,ranked No. 2 in the country at 133 pounds by InterMat, went 2-0 at the Northeast Duals Saturday in Troy, N.Y. Sentes opened the day with a 7-1 decision over Bricker Dixon of No. 8 Cornell before defeating No. 17 Jamie Franco of Hofstra by decision, 8-2. The senior is off to a 3-0 start in hisfinal campaign in the Maroon and Gold, showing the true form that allowed him to earn a pair of All-American honors before taking a redshirt season last year.

The award is the first of the season for Sentes and the third of his career.

The Chippewas (2-2) open MAC competition Saturday when they travel to Ohio. Thematch is set to begin at 7 p.m.

Garnett Named ACC Wrestler Of The Week; Hokie senior's big win at 125 pounds sets tone in victory over Cavaliers

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech redshirt senior Jarrod Garnett has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after his convincing win at 125 pounds keyed the 12th-ranked Hokies past 17th-ranked Virginia in the conference opener for both teams on Sunday.

The eighth-ranked Garnett scored an 11-2 win over seventh-ranked and defending ACC champion Matt Snyder to send Virginia Tech off and running. The Newark, Del., native used four takedowns and a reversal, plus over a minute of riding time to give Tech a quick 4-0 lead. The Hokies went on to post a 25-6 team win. For Garnett, it was his 100th career victory, making him the seventh member of Tech’s 100-win club in program history.

Sunday’s 125-pound match featured two wrestlers who have claimed the last three ACC individual titles in that weight class. Garnett took honors in 2010 and 2011 before missing last season due to a redshirt. Snyder captured the 125 title in 2012.

Sunday’s ACC match included 12 wrestlers that were nationally ranked in the most recent edition of Amateur Wrestling News.

Bloomsburg wrestlers sweep weekly awards for PSAC and EWL

BLOOMSBURG — Two Bloomsburg University wrestlers have swept the weekly awards from the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) and the EWL (Eastern Wrestling League). Named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week was Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), while Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) was named the EWL Wrestler of the Week.
 
In Bloomsburg's sweep of three matches at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y., Hickman was victorious in each of his three bouts. Hickman, ranked seventh in the country (Wrestling Report.com) in the 157 weight class, brought down his Hofstra opponent winning by a technical fall helping the Huskies to a 24-10 win. Against Princeton, Hickman scored a 14-2 major decision victory, recording a take down and a two-point near fall in each of the first two periods of his event. The Huskies defeated Princeton 31-10. Bloomsburg next took down Drexel 33-6, with Hickman winning by major decision,17-4. Hickman is 9-2 on the year, with two falls and two major decision victories.
 
Dessino, who is red-shirting this season, wrestled unattached in Lock Haven University's Mat Town Open, and easily won the crown at 174 pounds picking up three wins by fall. He won his first of three bouts by pin in just 1:06 and then won his semi-final match by fall in 1:21. In the finals, Dessino pinned Bucknell's Stephen McPeek in 3:41. Dessino is a former EWL champion, two-time EWL finalist and a two-time NCAA qualifier.

The Huskies are idle till Dec. 8 when they take part in the PSAC Championships.
