Information on Steve Rockford and his battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease
From RockinForRockford.com

Steve Rockford is a 41 year old husband and father of five amazing children. Steve and his family recently received the devastating news that he has ALS-Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) for which there is no cure.

Lou Gehrig’s Disease otherwise known as ALS-Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a fatal disease which affects the motor neurons, the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement. For mostly unknown reasons, ALS causes motor neurons to die and the muscles they control to become weak and then paralyzed.

Steve, a Special Education Teacher at Southeast High School, and his wife, Tammie, an Early Intervention Service Coordinator at the Sangamon County Public Health Department, are high school sweethearts. They and the “Fab Five,” a nickname coined by their proud parents, are a strong part of youth and high school athletics, and have been making a difference in the lives of young people in our community.

Steve is currently the head wrestling coach and football defensive coach at Southeast High School, and has also held coaching positions over the years at both Sacred Heart Griffin and Lanphier. Steve cares about his wrestlers and players and works to instill values, pride, and respect to help them excel not only in competition, but also in life.

The “Fab Five” are Maddie 15 (a student at Southeast), Abbi 13, Andrew 9, Elizabeth 8, and Connor 7 (students at Ball Charter). They are terrific kids, and a testament to the type of quality loving people their parents are.

The family currently lives in Steve’s modest childhood home near Lanphier High School and soon the two-story house will not be functional for Steve and his family. Retrofitting this home to make it accessible isn’t feasible and as you can imagine, finding an affordable home for this large family will be another tough challenge they are facing.

Please help us support this extraordinary family and ensure they have the resources they will need in the months and years to come.
