SESSION II AT WORLD CUP OF FREESTYLE WRESTLING 2000 AT FAIRFAX, VA., FEB. 5 
  UNITED STATES DEFEATS IRAN, 17-11 TO REMAIN UNBEATEN AT WORLD CUP 
 After losing the first two matches, the United States stormed back to claim five of the last six bouts and defeat Iran, 17-11, at the World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling 2000 in Fairfax, Va., Feb. 5. The United States ended the first day of competition with an undefeated 2-0 record. 
 Iran scored a pair of shutout victories in the first two matches. Behnam Tayebi stopped Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan./Dave Schultz WC), 3-0 at 119 pounds to start the dual meet. 1998 World Champion Ali Reza Dabir followed with a 5-0 decision over Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds. 
 Two-time World medalist Cary Kolat (Morgantown, W.Va./Dave Schultz WC) ignited the U.S. comeback, with an exciting pin over Mashallah Hosseini in 4:53 at 138.75 pounds. Two-time World medalist Lincoln McIlravy (Iowa City, Iowa/Gateway WC) continued the U.S. charge, with a 4-0 decision over Mehdi Baraati at 152 pounds. 
 Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) scored a strong 9-1 victory over Ramezanali Oliani Nejad at 167.5 pounds. 1997 World Champion Les Gutches (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) kept up the pressure with a 5-2 win over Mehdi Saredjlov at 187.25 pounds. 
 Iran won its third bout when 1998 World champion Ali Reza Heidari stopped Dominic Black (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 7-3,  at 213.75 pounds. Kerry McCoy (State College, Pa./New York AC) closed out the meet with a victory for the USA at 286 pounds, beating Ali Reza Rezaei, 4-0. 
 The United States had a 2-0 record, and Iran a 1-1 record in the World Cup after the match.  
  RUSSIA DEFEATS UKRAINE, 22-7, FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN AT FREESTYLE WORLD CUP  
 By winning six of the eight matches contested, Russia defeated Ukraine, 22-7, to capture its second straight victory at the World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling 2000 in Fairfax, Va., Feb. 5. 
 European champion Alexander Zakharuk of Ukraine won the first match of the night, with a 3-1 win over Maxim Molonov. Russia responded quickly, when Zelimkhan Gussienov won a 10-0 technical fall over Vasil Fedoryshyn at 127.75 pounds, and went on to claim six of the next seven victories. Among the Russian winners was 1997 World Champion Kouramagomed Kouramagomedov, who defeated Sergey Pryadun, 4-0 at 213.75 pounds. 
 Russia climbed to a 2-0 record, and Ukraine a 0-2 record in the World Cup after the match. 
 CUBA DEFEATS UKRAINE, 23-8, FOR ITS FIRST VICTORY AT THE WORLD CUP COMPETITION 
 Cuba won all five matches contested on the mat, and easily defeated Ukraine, 23-8, for its first win during the World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling 2000 in Fairfax, Va., Feb. 5. 
 1997 World Champion Wilfredo Garcia got Cuba off to a strong strart, defeating 1999 World bronze medalist Alexander Zakharuk, 6-2 at 119 pounds. Yoendris Albear followed with a 4-1 win over Vasil Fedoryshyn at 127.75 pounds. Other Cuban winners included Yosmany Sanchez at 152 pounds, Daniel Gonzales at 167.5 pounds and Wilfredo Morales at 213.75 pounds. Three bouts were either forfeits or injury defaults. 
 Cuba now has a 1-2 record in the World Cup, while Ukraine fell to 0-3 for the tournament.
