NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seven U.S. athletes won gold medals at the 2012 New York Athletic Club International in Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle on Friday night.

Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler in the women’s division was 2012 World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), the champion at at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.  

Lampe won a three-athlete round-robin to claim the title She defeated Ai Nakaya of Japan in the deciding bout by technical fall, 6-0, 8-0 and won her other bout by pin.

Six of the gold medals were won by U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers, who claimed all the titles except one.

Winning the Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman was the champion at 60 kg/132 lbs., Jamel Johnson (Greensboro, N.C. (YES Wrestling). He needed three periods to defeat  Takashi Sasaki of Japan, 5-0, 1-2 ,4-0 in the finals. Johnson recently won a bronze medal at the 2012 University World Championships in Finland.

Olympian Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) pinned 2012 University World champion Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC/USOEC) in the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. It was a rematch of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials finals series, also won by Mango. Both are past University World champions.

Mango had a big throw in the first period, and quickly lifted and pinned Nowry in the opening seconds of the second period.

There were three other all-American finals in the Greco-Roman division.

In a battle of past World Team members at 74 kg/163 lbs. 2011 World Team member Andrew Bisek (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) stopped 2010 World Team member Jake Fisher (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) for the gold, 2-0, 1-0.

At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Caylor Williams (Greensboro, N.C./YES Wrestling) scored a second period pin over Marcus Finau (Ewa Beach, Fla./NYAC/USOEC), 4-1, 1:30 in a spirited match between top young stars.

Finau has competed on the last two Junior World Teams, and Williams wrestled on the 2012 U.S. University World Team.

At 120 kg/264.5 lbs., Robbie Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo/NYAC) edged Erik Nye (Colorado Springs, Col. (U.S.Army), 1-0, 1-0. Both are past Greco-Roman National Team members.

Smith has made the move up to superheavyweight, after many years at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Nye has not wrestled in almost three years and made his debut with the Army program. They have a rivalry going back to their days in high school, when they both competed for Team California at the Cadet Nationals and wrestled each other in the national finals in both styles.

The other U.S. champion was young talent.RaVaughn Perkins (Omaha, Neb./ReadyRP Nationals) who stopped Kazuhiko Naruse of Japan, 1-0, 3-0 in the finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs

The men’s freestyle competition will be held on Saturday, with the first session starting at 11:00 a.m.
