USA Wrestling is announcing two changes to this weekend’s wrestling competitions in New York City. 

The schedule for the New York Athletic Club International in New York City has been changed, to accommodate the many wrestlers who have had travel problems due to the weather situation on the East Coast.

In addition, the USA vs. Russia men’s freestyle dual meet, scheduled for Sunday, November 11, has been cancelled due to the challenges caused by the recent Superstorm Sandy in the region as well as travel problems for the Russian delegation.

Many athletes travelling today to New York City have not been able to reach their destination, due to numerous flight cancellations going into the New York area airports. This has a major impact on the Greco-Roman and women’s divisions, which will be held on the first day of the event.

The schedule for the New York Athletic Club International has been changed to add a second weigh-in for the Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle event.

The original weigh-in times on Thursday, November 8 remain the same, with Greco-Roman registration at 2:00 p.m. and weigh-in at 3:00 p.m., followed by women’s freestyle registration at 2:30 p.m. and weigh-in at 3:30 p.m.

A second registration and weigh in for athletes with flight delays has been set for Friday morning, November 9. Registration for both styles will be at 7:30 a.m., followed by an 8:00 a.m. weigh-in. Please note that there has been an additional kilogram allowance added just for this special Friday morning weigh-in, which will be +3 kg above the official FILA weight classes.

The first session of wrestling for the Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle has been pushed back two hours. The new starting time for the competition will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 9. The tournament will not be broken up into sessions, going through to completion.

The schedule change also affects the men’s freestyle tournament which will be held the next day. The registration and weigh-in times for the men’s freestyle competition remain the same on Friday, November 9, with registration at 2:00 p.m. and weigh-ins at 3:00 p.m.

The freestyle tournament will also have a delayed start on Saturday, November 10, with an 11:00 a.m. starting time. In addition, men’s freestyle will not be broken up into sessions, going through to completion.

A decision was also reached by organizers today to cancel the USA vs. Russia men’s freestyle dual meet set for Sunday at the New York Athletic Club. 

The Russian delegation was faced with visa issues, and some of the athletes scheduled to compete were not able to travel. Because of this, the Russians will not have a full team of athletes in New York. Those athletes who were able to travel will still enter the New York Athletic Club International on Saturday as scheduled.

In addition, the recent hurricane and weather problems today added to the venue challenges. All involved with organizing the dual meet decided that it was best not to host the USA vs. Russia dual meet this year due to the many circumstances.
