UPDATED: Six U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers win golds at Hargobind International in Canada

BURNABY MOUNTAIN, BC., Canada – U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers dominated the action at the Hargobind International held at Simon Fraser University, winning six of the seven gold medals awarded.

Among the individual champions was 2012 U.S. Olympian and 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Dlagnev defeated Canadian Sunny Dhinsa in the championship finals. It was a rematch of the finals at the 2011 Pan American Games, which was also won by Dlagnev. Dlagnev, a two-time Div. II national champion for Nebraska-Kearney, was fifth at the 2012 Olympics.

Claiming the gold was at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. was David Zabriskie (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC), who defeated Wynn Michalak (Champaign, Ill.) in the finals. Zabriskie is a past NCAA champion from Iowa State, who has moved to join the Lehigh Valley AC coaching staff, while Michalak starred for Central Michigan. 

Two athletes from the PINnacle club from Minnesota were individual champions, Zach Sanders (Minneapolis, Minn./PINnacle) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Kevin LeValley (Minneapolis, Minn./PINnacle) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Sanders was a college star at Minnesota, while LeValley starred for Bucknell. Sanders beat Canadian Jake Hergenhein in the finals, while LeValley stopped Canadian C.J. Hudson for the gold.

The other two champions from the USA defeated American opponents in the finals.

At 74 kg/163 lbs., Nick Marable (Columbia, Mo./Sunkist Kids) stopped Nate Carr (Ames, Iowa/Cyclone WC) in the championship match. Marable starred for Missouri, while Carr competed at Iowa State.

Phil Keddy (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) defeated Clayton Foster (Laramie, Wyo./Grit WC) in the finals at 84 kg/185 lbs. Keddy was an Iowa star, while Foster wrestled for Oklahoma State.

The only Canadian to win a title was Michael Asselstine of the Bears WC at 60 kg/132 lbs.
