No Holds Barred ()
11/01/2012
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman again speaks with former NCAA Div. I All-American wrestler at Indiana, and current Assistant Professor of Sport Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Coyte Cooper.
Our focus is on a preview of the NWCA All-Star Classic
This event, featuring many of the best college wrestlers in America and helping to kick off the 2012-13 college wrestling season, will take place Saturday, November 3, at the Bender Arena on the campus of American University in Washington, D.C. It will be telecast on tape-delay in the U.S. on Fox College Sports and live on a pay webcast on Flowrestling.
This All-Star event is highlighted by matches in the ten college wrestling weight classes, headlined by a showdown at 165 pounds between three-time NCAA Div. I national champion Kyle Dake of Cornell against the defending NCAA Div. I national champion at 165, David Taylor of Penn State. Over the previous three seasons, Dake has won titles at 141, 149, and 157 pounds respectively, making him the first wrestler to win three NCAA Div. I national championships in three different weight classes. Taylor was last season's winner of the coveted Hodge Trophy for the best college wrestler in America. Dake will thus move up in weight once again for this match to face Taylor.
"It's such a unique matchup. What you have here with this matchup is two of the best wrestlers in the United States at any weight when it comes to college wrestling," said Coyte Cooper in this interview, which was recorded by phone Wednesday afternoon. He added that both wrestlers are known for having exciting styles. "Most coaches will tell you, 'I don't remember the last time when there was this much hype for a matchup.'"
We also discussed the other matches at this event, including other national champions and All-Americans who are competing, the likelihood that many of the Olympians of the future will be featured here, and much more.
