USA vs. Russia freestyle dual set for Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y., Sunday November 11

An exhibition men’s freestyle dual meet between the United States and Russia has been set for the Mack Sports Complex at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. on Sunday, November 11.

This longtime rivalry features the national teams from two of the world’s best wrestling powers, showcasing top international stars from both nations.

It will be a great day for wrestling fans. A clinic, featuring USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coaches Zeke Jones, Brandon Slay and Bill Zadick will be scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The clinic is entitled “How Freestyle Wrestling will Make You a Better Folkstyle Wrestler.” Slay was a 2000 Olympic gold medalist and Jones won a 1992 Olympic silver medal. Jones was a 1991 World champion and Zadick was a 2006 World champion.

The dual meet will begin at 2:00 p.m. The lineups for each nation will be announced shortly, but are expected to include many experienced and talented international competitors. 

The event will be webcast live by TheMat.com and its video portal, TheMat.tv.

The dual meet is sponsored by Hofstra University, the New York Athletic Club, the Friends of Long Island Wrestling and USA Wrestling

The USA vs. Russia dual meet will be held one day after the men’s freestyle competition at the annual New York Athletic Club International Championships in New York City on Saturday, November 10. This top international competition will feature athletes from a number of nations.

The USA and Russia competed in a freestyle dual meet at Hofstra on Nov. 19, 2010, and the United States scored an impressive 6-1 victory in front of thousands of fans. U.S. winners at this dual meet included top U.S. stars Shawn Bunch (60 kg), Brent Metcalf (66 kg), Trent Paulson (74 kg), Jake Herbert (84 kg), J.D. Bergman (96 kg) and Tervel Dlagnev (120 kg). All six winners have been U.S. World Team members, and Herbert and Dlagnev competed at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Tickets for the clinic and dual meet will be available shortly. The tickets will cost $10 for students, $15 for adults and $20 for VIP seating. When they are available, tickets can be purchased at by visiting www.gohofstra.com or call 516-463-8499.
