USA Wrestling is one of 15 national wrestling organizations who are working together to declare November 3 as National Wrestling Day.
This project has been spearheaded by Joe Baranik of Pennsylvania Wrestling Newsmagazine, and is intended to bring national spotlight on the sport. He kicked off this initiative in 2011 with the first National Wrestling Day, which was Dec. 5 last year.
This year, the day selected coincides with the NWCA All-Star Classic at American University in Washington, D.C. Many of the nation’s best college stars will battle in challenge matches at this annual showcase event.
There will be a series of athlete appearances held during the day in Washington D.C., including a special clinic organized by Wade Schalles, a Hall of Fame wrestler and coach who is highly respected within the sport. A number of other college wrestling events will be held on this day around the nation, a strong launch for the new college folkstyle season.
It will be the start of the USA Wrestling youth folkstyle season, with the hosting of the Cliff Keen USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa over the weekend. A number of top U.S. international wrestlers will also be in action on November 3 at the Hargobind International in Burnaby Mountain, Canada as part of the new international season.
“Our hope is to have the whole Wrestling Nation pull together and celebrate the start of the 2012-13 wrestling season. The day will include clinics and tournaments across the country, culminating with the NWCA All-Star meet at 7:30 pm,†said Baranik.
