The new USA Wrestling events season is upon us, and there are already some great competitions available to young wrestlers.

Over the past two years, the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals has sold out prior to the start of the event. This year the Preseason Nationals has been expanded to a two-day event to allow all athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The 2012 event will be held on Nov. 3-4. This major national folkstyle wrestling tournament has become one of the premiere competitions in the nation each fall.

With less than a month until the tournament, about 1,900 athletes have already registered to compete. These athletes represent 35 different states, including some of the most successful athletes in the nation.

The tournament will include high school, middle school and grade school competitions for boys, and a new girls’ high school division. This is a competitive double-elimination tournament which will help all who participate to get ready for the scholastic season ahead.

Last year’s High School division was loaded, and with nearly 2,000 registrants this year, you can expect the same again this year. Some of the featured champions from a year ago included:
• Paul Mascarenas of New Mexico at 106 pounds, who was also a Junior Nationals freestyle champion last summer
• Colton Adams of Nebraska at 120 pounds, who was also a Junior Nationals Folkstyle champion last spring
• Grant LaMont of Utah at 138 pounds, who was a Junior National Greco-Roman champion and competed in the FILA Cadet World Championships last summer
• Bo Nickal of Texas at 145 pounds, who was a USA Wrestling Cadet Triple Crown winner in 2012
• Donte Winfield on Indiana at 285 pounds, who won a silver medal at the Junior Nationals in freestyle last summer.

In 2011, there were 275 Middle School athletes in competition. This year, that number has already grown to 375 athletes who will all be competing with the best, to be the best. This has become a true early season test for wrestlers for all ages and from all over the country.

Remember that the 2012-2013 membership year began on September 1. Athletes must have a current USA Wrestling membership in order to register. Coaches must have a current background check and membership. To renew or purchase cards, please visit www.USAWMembership.com
