Fourteen U.S. wrestlers win gold medals at the Second Annual Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 12 
   Fourteen U.S. wrestlers claimed gold medals at the Second annual Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Feb. 12. 
  The tournament included freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling and is held in memory of the late Dave Schultz. Schultz was a 1984 Olympic champion freestyle wrestler who was internationally respected as an ambassador of goodwill and sportmanship.  
  This was the first year a women's division was held. 
   Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) pulled off the biggest upset of the evening when he defeated 1997 World Champion Wilfredo Garcia, 4-3, to start off the finals competition at 119 pounds. Abas is a 1998 Junior World Champion.    
 The other U.S. freestyle champion was Jeff McGinness (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 137.75 pounds. McGinness decisioned Jeremy Ensrud (Springsfield, Ore./Dave Schultz WC), 8-5.   
 Freestyle foreign World Champions who won were: Yoel Romero (Cuba) at 187.25 pounds and Kuramagomed Kuramagomedov (Russia) at 213.75 pounds.  Romero decisioned SajidSajidov (Russia), 3-1. Romero is a 1999 World Champion. 
  Kuramagomedov decisioned Wilfredo Morales (Cuba), 4-2. Kuramagomedov was a 1997 World Champion.   
 Six U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers won a gold medal. They include: Jeff Cervone (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 119 pounds, Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 137.75 pounds, Heath Sims (Huntington Beach, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 152 pounds, Chael Sonnen (Tualatin, Ore./Dave Schultz WC) at 187.25 pounds, Jason Gleasman (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 213.75 pounds and Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.    
 Cervone scored a big win with a 10-5 decision over Pata Bitsadze (Georgia) to start adding up the point for the team winner the U.S. Air Force.   
 Nieradka defeated fellow American Charley Carbaugh (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) by a technical fall, 14-0.   
 Sims scored a decision over U.S. Olympic Training Center Athlete Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 4-1. Sims was also named the Outstanding Wrestler in the Greco-Roman division.   
 Sonnen pinned No. 4 Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 0:26 to pull off the upset. Sonnen is currently ranked No. 6 in the United States.   
 Gleasman was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team and defeated four-time U.S. Nationals champion Randy Couture (Gresham, Ore./Sunkist Kids) by a decision, 5-0.   
 Gardner won his second Dave Schultz Memorial International Championship when he won by an injury default over Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army).   
 The Outstanding Wrestler in the women's division was Malissa Sherwood (Rocklin, Calif./Dave Schultz Wc) at 123.25 pounds. Sherwood won by a technical fall over Grace Magnusson (Marshall, Mo./Viking WC), 11-0.    
 Ranked No. 1 at 112.25 pounds is Stephanie Murata (Boca Raton, Fla./Sunkist Kids). She won by a technical fall over Casey Baranoski (Marshall, Mo./Viking WC), 10-0. Murata placed fourth in both the 1998 and 1999 World Championships. 
  Eleven countries were represented in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling with a total of 215 athletes competing, 97 in freestyle, 75 in Greco-Roman and 43 in womens. 
  Attending the tournament was Dave Schultz's widow Nancy Schultz, his father Philip Schultz and his mother Jean St. Germaine.   
 There is no competition at 58 kg/127.75 pounds in Greco-Roman due to the balance of wrestlers participating at that weight class. They moved up to 63 kg/138.75 pounds.
