Stenberg, Erickson finish fifth on final day of University World Championships

KOURTANE, Finland – Americans Mark Stenberg and Toby Erickson each finished fifth at the University World Championships on the final day of the event on Saturday.
Stenberg (Lockport, Ill./New York AC) dropped his bronze-medal match at 84 kg/185 lbs. while Erickson (East Helena, Montana/New York AC) fell in his bronze-medal match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
The U.S. finished fifth in the Greco-Roman competition with 36 points. Russia won the title with 50 points, followed by Turkey (46) and Iran (44).
Stenberg opened by earning three-period wins over Adrian Mocanu of Moldova and Victor Sasunouski of Belarus before falling to eventual champion Taleb Nematpour of Iran in the semifinals.
Stenberg then lost to Finland’s Pekka Rintama Ki in the match for bronze.
Erickson swept Japan’s Shori Maekawa in the first round before falling to Russia’s Alikhan Ayubov in the quarterfinals. Erickson was pulled back in for the repechage when Ayubov reached the finals.
Erickson took two straight periods from Estonia’s Mihkel Allikma before being defeated by China’s Longsheng Xu in the match for bronze.
American Caylor Williams dropped his first match to Romania’s Robert Papp at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Williams was eliminated when Papp lost in the semifinals.
The top-five team finish by the U.S. in Greco-Roman was led by gold medalist Max Nowry and bronze medalist Jamel Johnson.
