U.S. wrestlers weigh in on first day of freestyle at Dmitry Korkin International in Russia

YAKUTSK, Russia – Seven U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers will compete on the opening day of the Dmitry Korkin International on Saturday.

The U.S. has three athletes competing at 84 kg/185 lbs. As determined by random draw, two of the U.S. athletes will wrestle each other in the opening round, Tyrel Todd (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) and Max Askren (Somers, N.Y./New York AC). Askren was an NCAA champion for Missouri, and Todd was an All-American for Michigan.

Both Todd and Askren won matches in a dual meet against a regional Russian team last weekend.

The other American competing at 84 kg/185 lbs. is former Pittsburgh NCAA champion Keith Gavin (Bethlehem, Pa. /Lehigh Valley AC), who faces  Batmukh Magmarsyren of Mongolia, a 2008 Asian Junior bronze medalist.

At 55 kg/121 lbs., former Cornell All-American Frank Perrelli (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC) opens with Valerian Petrov of Russia. 

The U.S. has three entries at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.: Kevin LeValley (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), Adam Hall (New York, N.Y./New York AC) and Chase Pami (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids). This weight class is being redrawn, so their pairings are not currently available. We will update this when we receive the information.
