Williams placed fifth in Greco-Roman at FILA Golden Grand Prix Finals in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan – Caylor Williams (Greensboro, N.C./YES Wrestling) placed fifth at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. at the Heydar Aliyev Golden Grand Prix Finals on Sunday.

Williams opened the tournament with a close 0-1, 0-1 loss to 2012 World Cup champion Gadabadze Shalva of Azerbaijan. When Gadabazde qualified for the finals, Williams was pulled back into the repechage.

He won his first repechage match, stopping Araz Hasanov of Azerbaijan, 1-0, 2-0. In his bronze medal bout, Williams was defeated by 2011 Junior World champion Islam Mogamedov of Russia, 0-1, 0-2.

It was the second time Williams placed fifth in this event this week, as he was also fifth at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle on Friday.

Williams is a member of the 2012 U.S. University World Greco-Roman Team which will compete in Kourtane, Finland, October 2-7.

The USA had two entries at 55 kg/121 lbs., Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC) and Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn. /Minnesota Storm). They drew each other in the first round, with Nowry winning 1-0, 1-0. In his next match, Nowry lost to Hasim Baykara of Turkey, 1-0, 0-3, 0-3.
