FLASH: Bellamy wins bronze medal on final day of Greco-Roman at Veterans Worlds in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Octavius Bellamy of River Forest, Ill. won a bronze medal at 97 kg in Div. A (35-40 years old) on the final day of Greco-Roman at the 2012 Veterans World Championships.

Bellamy had a strong day of competition, going 3-1 on the way to his bronze medal.

He opened with a pair of wins, stopping Tamas Tarjanyi of Hungary and Zoltan Vatzi of Hungary in his opening two bouts.

He was defeated in the semifinals, which placed him in a bronze-medal match. Bellamy bounced back to win his final match and come home with a bronze medal.

He became the sixth U.S. wrestler to win a medal at the Veterans Worlds in Greco-Roman this year, joining:
• Gregg Stensgard of Vernal, Utah  (gold medal at 85 kg in Div. D)
• Ron Engel of St. Helena, Calif. (silver medal at 63 kg in Div. F)
• Chris Brown of Boyds, Md. (bronze medal at 76 kg in Div. D)
• Sarkis Dermenjian of Valley Glenn, Calif. (bronze medal at 85 kg in Div. E)
• Peter Haag of Chicago, Ill. (bronze medal at 85 kg in Div. E)

The USA three other wrestlers compete in Div. A on Thursday and fell short of the medal rounds: Jose Gamez, Jr. (58 kg), Ignacio Ramirezlazos, (69 kg) and August Wesley (85 kg).

Men’s freestyle competition begins on Thursday in three weight divisions: Div. B (41 – 45 years old). Div. E (56 – 60 years old) and Div. F (61 – 65 years old).
