U.S. claims three medals on first day of Greco-Roman at Veterans Worlds in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary – The United States won three medals on the opening day of Greco-Roman at the Veterans World Championships on Tuesday.

Winning a silver medal at 63 kg in Div. F (61 – 65 years old) was Ron Engel of St. Helena, Calif. Engel was defeated in his only match, losing in the finals to Mikhail Akopnin of Russia.

The USA had a pair of bronze medalists at 85 kg in Div. E (56 – 60 years old), Sarkis Dermenjian of Valley Glenn, Calif. and Peter Haag of Chicago, Ill.

Dermenjian defeated American Steve Contarino in his bronze-medal match. Haag scored a victory in the bronze medal round over Vlaho Stajin of Serbia.

The U.S. had three athletes place fifth: Contarino, Kevin Pine of Las Vegas, Nev. (Div. B, 85 kg) and Garry Price, of Mifflintown, Pa. (Div. F, 85 kg).

Two more age divisions in Greco-Roman will compete on Wednesday, Div. C (46 – 50 years old) and Div. D (51 – 55 years old).
