PATTAYA, Thailand – The sentiment seemed to be the same all week for the United States. It wasn’t what they wanted. For U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete Pat Downey, it really wasn’t, but he’ll still take it. Downey was the lone U.S. medalist in men’s freestyle competition at the 2012 FILA Junior World Championships at the Eastern Sports Training Center in Pattaya, Thailand. On Sunday, he wound up with the silver medal losing to Iran’s Mohammadjavad Ebrahimi 1-2, 1-0, 4-0. “It’s bittersweet,†said Downey. “Like I said earlier, I’m still the first loser, but I felt like I wrestled tough the whole tournament. It’s the toughest tournament I’ve ever been to and every match is a fight. You have to figure out a way to win and I did a real good job of that up until the last match. “I can’t help but to still be happy with (the silver,†said Downey. Downey struck first in the final, doubling off of a single leg to score the first takedown, and a 1-0 lead. Ebrahimi battled back and scored with under 30 seconds remaining in the first, but Downey again attacked and earned a takedown on a scramble he created with five seconds remaining. In the second, the two battled for 119 seconds without a score until Ebrahimi earned a pushout and the second-period win with just one tick left on the clock. In the third, Ebrahimi countered every hurried Downey attempt to win 4-0 and earn gold. “He’s a kid that every time he’s in the room, he works hard,†said USA Wrestling Developmental Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick. “He’s exciting and likes to wrestle. He’s a real competitor. I appreciate that about him.†Downey stormed into the finals at 84 kg/185 lbs. after three victories on the top side of the championship bracket. The 2011 USA Wrestling Junior National freestyle champion spent the last year living at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. He opened up with a 1-1, 0-1, 3-0 win over Evgheni Eremiev of Moldova, before dominating Korea’s Hyeok-Beom Gwon 3-1, 3-1. In the semifinals, Downey cruised past a lethargic Vahe Tamrazyan of Armenia, scoring pushouts almost at will in a 4-2, 6-0 victory. Tamrazyan was cautioned twice for fleeing the mat during the match. Downey finished off the second period with a strong two-point gutwrench. Joey Dance (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg H.S.), Destin McCauley (Burnsville, Minn./Sunkist Kids) and Austin Marsden (Crystal Lake, Ill./Cowboy WC) all competed on Sunday and failed to reach the medal rounds. Dance was the only wrestler who was defeated in the championships bracket who had a chance to wrestle back for bronze after losing in the opening round to 2012 Junior World silver medalist Lasha Talakhadze of Georgia 5-1, 1-0. Talakhadze would finish with another silver, losing in the finals to Mongolia's Bekhbayar Erdenebat. In the first repechage match, Dance blitzed Estonia’s Aleksei Baskakov 5-0, 6-0 before being beaten by Armenia’s Artak Hovhannisyan 4-5, 1-0, 3-2 in a match with several questionable calls including a second-period clinch. Dance would finish in 11th place. McCauley, wrestling at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., opened up with a 1-0, 3-1 win over Uzbekistan’s Muzaffar Rizaev. In the second round, McCauely came out strong to win the first period but was ultimately beaten by Iran’s Aliasghar Jabali by fall in the third. McCauley was eliminated when Jabali was beaten by Turkey’s Mustafa Kaya in the quarterfinals. McCauley would finish in 17th place. Russia's Magomed Kurbanaliev won the title at the weight, topping Georgia's Konstantine Khabalashvili in the finals. Marsden, wrestling at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., drew the 2012 Asian Junior Champion, Abdollah Gohmi, but lost in three periods, 5-0, 2-4, 1-0. Marsden was eliminated when Gohmi lost to Russia’s Magomedgadzhi Nurasolov in the quarterfinals. Marsden would finish 11th. Nurasolov would eventually earn the championship, pinning Ukraine's Muradyn Kushkov in the first period of the final match at heavyweight. The United States men’s freestyle team finished in 14th place. Russia won the team championship with 64 points, followed by Azerbaijan with 47. Iran was third with 44.
