BAKU, Azerbaijan – Danny Boychuck of Haddonfield, N.J. placed fifth at 46 kg/101 lbs. in Greco-Roman on the final day of action at the FILA Cadet World Championships on Sunday. Boychuck had the top performance among U.S. Greco-Roman athletes in the competition.

Boychuck opened with a victory over Takumi Tashiro of Japan, 1-0, 6-0. He was defeated in the second round by Mikayil Rahmanov of Azerbaijan, 0-5, 2-3, who eventually went on to win the gold medal.

When Rahmanov reached the finals, Boychuck was drawn back into the repechage. He pinned Batuhan Bozkhurt of Turkey in his first repechage bout to reach the bronze medal round, where he was defeated by Balbai Dordokov of Kyrgzstan, 5-0, 2-0.

Two other U.S. wrestlers on Sunday won a match and placed in the top 10 in their weight classes. In both cases, they lost in their second round to an athlete who did not reach the finals, and were ineligible for the repechage.

Chandler Rogers of Spokane, Wash. placed eighth at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. Rogers opened with a wide-open three-period win over Vladyslav Manin of Ukraine, 6-0, 2-4, 2-1. He was defeated in the next match by Nika Gavasheli of Georgia, 0-6, 2-7.

Competing in his second FILA Cadet World Championships, Hayden Tuma of Boise, Idaho, placed ninth at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. He defeated Lars Ebbesson of Sweden, 1-0, 6-0 in the opening round. His next bout was a loss to Ghanbari Parham of Iran, 0-1, 2-5.

Two other U.S. athletes dropped their only match on Sunday and did not place in the top 10, James Flint of Brandon, Fla. at 54 kg/119 lbs. and Garrett Ryan of Scottsdale, Ariz. at 100 kg/220 lbs.

The United States placed 10th in the team standings with 15 points. Azerbaijan was dominant in winning the team title with 84 points. Azerbaijan had four champions on Sunday and six overall Greco-Roman champion. Georgia was second with 62 points and Russia was third with 61 points.

The United States had four overall FILA Cadet World medalists during the week. Winning gold medals were Marina Doi of Kingsburg, Calif. at 38 kg/83.75 lbs. in women’s freestyle and Zain Retherford of Benton, Pa. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in men’s freestyle. Capturing a silver medal was Kayla Miracle of Bloomington, Ind. at 56 kg/123.25 lbs. Taking a bronze medal was Anastasia Lobsinger of Martinez, Calif. at 70 kg/154 lbs. in women’s freestyle.
