PIERCE WINS BRONZE MEDAL AT SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT AT SWEDEN CUP IN MALMO, SWEDEN, FEB. 25-26 

Billy Pierce (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) claimed a bronze medal at 286 pounds, the top U.S. performance at the Sweden Cup of Greco-Roman Wrestling in Malmo, Sweden, Feb. 25-26.

Pierce won three of his five matches during the tournament, including a 1-0 overtime referee's decision over 1995 World Champion Mikael Ljungberg of Sweden in the bronze-medal match. Pierce had lost a 5-0 match to Ljungberg earlier in the tournament during the pool competition.

Two U.S. wrestlers placed fourth in their weight divisions: Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 187.25 pounds and Garrett Lowney (Appleton, Wis./Minnesota Storm) at 220 pounds.

In the bronze-medal match, Niebuhr was defeated by veteran Martin Lidberg of Sweden, 6-0 in 7:23. He finished with a 3-2 record in the tournament.

Niebuhr won his first three matches to qualify for the semifinals. In his third match, Niebuhr defeated 1996 Olympic silver medalist Marko Asell of Finland, 9-5.

Lowney, a 1999 Junior World Champion, finished with a 2-2 record. He was pinned in the bronze-medal match by 1995 World Champion Hakki Basar of Turkey. Lowney won his first two bouts, including a 4-3 defeat of 1996 U.S. Olympian Jason Gleasman (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

Two U.S. wrestlers placed seventh: Gleasman and Corey Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo../U.S. Air Force) at 286 pounds. Placing ninth for the U.S. was Jacob Hey (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 127.75 pounds.
