Draws set for first day of men’s freestyle at FILA Cadet Worlds in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan – Weighins have been held and the draw has been set for the first day of men’s freestyle action at the FILA Cadet World Championships, which begin on Tuesday.

Five weight classes will be contested on the first day, 42 kg/92.5 lbs., 50 kg/110 lbs., 58 kg/127.75 lbs., 69 kg/152 lbs. and 85 kg/187.25 lbs. FILA Cadets are athletes 15-17 years old.

The only member of the U.S. men’s freestyle team who also competed in last year’s FILA Cadet World Championships will wrestle on Tuesday, Tommy Thorn of St. Michael, Minn. at 50 kg/110 lbs. Thorn opens up with 2011 Asian Cadet champion Yernur Kabatayev of Kazakhstan. Thorn was seventh last year at the FILA Cadet Worlds, and has since won FILA Cadet and Junior National freestyle titles.

Seth Gross of Rosemount, Minn., a 2012 FILA Cadet and the Cadet Nationals champion, will compete at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. He opens with Selim Kozan of Turkey, who was fifth in 2012 Cadet European Championships.

Also competing on Tuesday are Andrew Nieman of Stillwater, Okla. at 42 kg/92.5 lbs., Jack Bass of Allen, Texas at 69 kg/152 lbs. and Mitch Sliga of Fishers, Ind. at 85 kg/187.25 lbs.

Nieman opens with Yauheni Rebikau of Belarus. In his first match, Bass will face Omari Gurjidze of Georgia, who was seventh in 2011 Cadet World Championships. Sliga will await the winner of the preliminary bout between Tornike Basilashvili of Georgia and Vadzim Shershan of Belarus.

Coaching the men’s freestyle wrestlers are National Freestyle Developmental Coach Bill Zadick of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Zach Esposito of Stillwater, Okla.
