The United States is sending talented teams in the three Olympic styles of wrestling to the 2012 FILA Cadet World Championships, set for Baku, Azerbaijan, August 21-26. The FILA Cadet age division is for athletes who are 15-17 years old.

FILA reinstated the Cadet World Championships in 2011, after it had been suspended for more than a decade, going back to 1999.

The men’s freestyle competition will be held August 21-22, the women’s freestyle held August 23-24 and the Greco-Roman held August 25-26.

The qualifying event for the U.S. teams in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman was the FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron, Ohio in June. The U.S. women’s team was formed at the Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals in Lakeland, Fla. in May.

The competition begins with men’s freestyle. The United States will be led by Tommy Thorn of Minnesota at 50 kg/110 lbs., who was seventh in the 2011 Cadet World Championships. He is the only returning U.S. team member in men’s freestyle from last year.

Members of the FILA Cadet freestyle team who won titles at the FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron and the Junior Nationals in Fargo this year include Thorn and Zain Retherford of Pennsylvania, who is competing in Baku at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Winning FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron and the Cadet Nationals in Fargo this year was Seth Gross of Minnesota, who will compete at 58 kg/127.75 lbs.

In women’s freestyle, three members of the 2011 U.S. FILA Cadet World Team return this year. Marina Doi of California, who won a FILA Cadet World silver medal, will compete at 38 kg/83.75 lbs. Two athletes who placed eighth at the 2011 FILA Cadet World Championships also return in women’s freestyle, Regina Doi of California at 40 kg/88 lbs. and Kayla Miracle of Indiana at 56 kg/123.25 lbs.

Members of the FILA Cadet women’s freestyle team who won Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals in Lakeland and the Junior Nationals in Fargo this year include Miracle, plus Amy Hou of Georgia, who will compete at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. Winning the Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals in Lakeland and the Cadet Nationals in Fargo this year was Cadence Lee of California, who will compete at 49 kg/108 lbs.

The U.S. Greco-Roman team features one athlete who competed in last year’s FILA Cadet World Championships, Hayden Tuma of Idaho at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

U.S. Greco-Roman team members who won the FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron and the Junior Nationals in Fargo this year are Tuma, plus Grant LaMont of Utah, who will wrestle at 69 kg/152 lbs. Winning the FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron and the Cadet Nationals in Fargo this year are Kyle Norstrem of Florida, who will compete at 50 kg/110 lbs. and Chandler Rogers of Washington, who will compete at 76 kg/167.5 lbs.
