ESPN ANNOUNCES BROADCAST DATES FOR USA VS. IRAN WORLD DUAL AND THE U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

ESPN has notified USA Wrestling of the initial airdates for two of its major wrestling events, a USA vs. Iran World Dual meet and the U.S. National Championships.

The events are being produced on a taped-delayed basis by USA Sports Broadcasting, the broadcast division of USA Wrestling.

The USA vs. Iran World Dual meet will be aired on ESPN2 on Friday, April 7, from 4-5 p.m. EST. This is a new date and time from the previously released schedule information provided by ESPN.

A second airing of the USA vs. Iran Dual meet will be on ESPN2 on Monday, May 1, from 1:30-2:30 a.m. EST.

This dual meet between traditional world powers continues the exciting series of competition between the nations in recent years. It was orginally held at the Univ. of Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 8. The broadcast team for the event includes veteran athlete and coach Larry Nugent and 1996 Olympic champion Kendall Cross.

The U.S. team features a number of star athletes with connection to Oklahoma, including 1998 World Champion Sammie Henson (119) and 1999 World team member Eric Guerrero (127.75). The Iranian team is led by 1998 World Champion Ali Reza Dabir (127.75) and Ali Reza Heidari (213.75).

The U.S. National Championships will be aired twice in May on ESPN2. The first airing is set for Monday, May 15 from 1:30-2:30 a.m. EST. The second airing is set for Tuesday, May 23 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST.

The U.S. National Championships feature the best wrestlers in the United States, competing for national titles in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling. The 2000 U.S. Nationals has added significance, as is serves as the most important qualifying event for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

The event will initially be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., April 21-22. The broadcast team for this event has not yet been announced.

In early March, ESPN2 broadcast the 2000 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling nationally on two occasions. There may be additional airings of these three important USA Wrestling events, and announcements will be made as soon by USA Wrestling as information is provided.

USA Sports Broadcasting is the broadcast division of USA Wrestling, which produces a variety of amateur sports events and video projects.
