FARGO, N.D. – It was quite a week for the California women’s freestyle wrestling team.

Team California capped an impressive week by claiming the top two spots in the Junior Women’s Duals on Wednesday at the Fargo Dome.

California No. 1 and California No. 2 both advanced to the finals, where they were declared co-champions after electing not to face each other.

California No. 1 downed Washington 27-23 in one semifinal and California No. 2 defeated Hawaii 32-22 in the other semifinal.

“We’re just so impressed with how the two teams did overall,” said California No. 2 coach Marcie Van Dusen, a 2008 Olympian. “The difference in this year’s team is we didn’t have any individual national champions from California, and there were no superstars on this team.

"They were a solid team and they stuck together. It really shows when they wrestle in a dual. They support each other, encourage each other and pick each other up. They are just absolutely the definition of a good team.”

Jackie Williams delivered a key win for California No. 1 when she pinned Washington’s Kiaya Van Scoyoc in the second period at 159 pounds.

California No. 2 received pins from Elizabeth Phillips (105), Amy Spafford (139) and Monica Ramirez (148).

California won team titles in the Cadet Nationals and Junior Nationals tournaments earlier this week in Fargo.
