Mark Morris photo The United States had a dominant performance, winning six gold medals and nine total medals to capture the team title at the 2012 Pan American Cadet Freestyle Championships in Maracaibo, Venezuela on Sunday. The United States won the team title with 84 points, followed by host Venezuela with 81 points and Canada with 58 points. “The tournament was a great opportunity for our young American wrestlers to get their first international experience. They competed with pride and great effort, to earn individual medals and the Pan American Freestyle Team Title. American wrestling fans can be proud of the effort given and the results produced by these guys. The coaching staff sure is,†said U.S. coach Sam Barber. Winning individual gold medals were: • Fredy Stroker, Davenport, Iowa at 54 kg/119 lbs. • Fox Baldwin, Kissimmee, Fla. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. • Mark Hall, Goodrich, Mich. at 69 kg/152 lbs. • Andrew Garcia, Fenton, Mich. at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. • Eric Morris, Mechanicsburg, Pa. at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. • Carter Shipley, Windermere, Fla. at 100 kg/220 lbs. Morris was a silver medalist at the 2012 FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron, Ohio, and Hall and Garcia won bronze medals at the FILA Cadet Nationals. Winning an individual silver medal was Clay Stillwagon of Butte, Montana at 42 kg/92.5 lbs. Capturing bronze medals were Mason Daugherty of Auburn, Ohio at 46 kg/101.14 lbs. and Anthony Giraldo of Guttenberg, N.J. at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. A number of team members competed in both the Greco-Roman tournament on Friday and the freestyle tournament on Sunday. Claiming double titles by winning gold medals in both styles were Fox Baldwin at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Eric Morris at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. Those winning two medals was Carter Shipley at 100 kg/220 lbs. (gold in freestyle and silver in Greco-Roman). The USA won team titles in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman, and placed second in women’s freestyle. FILA Cadets are wrestlers who are 15-17 years old.
