U.S. Women's team claims three medals at the Klippan Ladies Open in Klippan, Sweden, March 11-12   

The U.S. women's team won three medals at the Klippan Ladies Open in Klippan, Sweden, March 11-12.

Two won silver medals: Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 149.75 pounds and Dominique Smalley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 165.25 pounds. Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) won the bronze medal at 136.5 pounds.

Marano won three matches before losing the gold-medal match in a close decision, 6-5, to Anita Schatzle of Germany. Marano scored a technical fall and a pin over her first two opponents, and a 7-4 decision over Lene Aanes of Norway in the semifinals.

Smalley won four of her five matches at the tournament to finish second. She won with two decisions and a technical fall in the first rounds, then decisioned Riabi Saida of Tunisia, 4-2, in the semifinals. Smalley lost 10-0 to Nina Englich of Germany in the final match.

McMann defeated U.S. team member Lauren Lamb 7-3 to claim the bronze medal. She first won by a technical fall and a pin in the beginning, then lost 5-3 to Nikola Hartman of Austria in the semifinals.

Three members of the U.S. team placed fourth: 1999 U.S. Nationals champion Olivia Ocampo (Oxnard, Calif./UM-Morris) at 101.25 pounds,Tina George-Wilson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cookies & Cream) at 123.25 pounds and Lauren Lamb (Troy, N.Y./Michigan WC) at 136.5 pounds.

The U.S. team was coached by Mike Duroe of Colorado Springs, Colo.
