FLASH: USA wins five gold medals to capture Greco title at Cadet Pan Ams in Venezuela

The United States edged host Venezuela, 91 points to 88 points, to win the Pan American Cadet Greco-Roman Championships in Maracaibo, Venezuela on Friday.

Capturing gold medals for the United States were:
• Chandler Strand, South Jordan, Utah at 50 kg/110 lbs.
• Fox Baldwin, Kissimmee, Fla. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
• Logan Breitenbach, Severna Park, Md. at 69 kg/152 lbs.
• Nick Corba, Beavercreek, Ohio at 76 kg/167.5 lbs.
• Eric Morris, Mechanicsburg, Pa. at 85 kg/187.25 lbs.

“The athletes wrestled a fantastic tournament and nipped the host Venezuelan team 91-88,” said Team Leader Matt Hampton. “We are proud of effort given by all ten members of Team USA. Logan Breitenbach defeated an exceptionally talented athlete from Honduras in Gold Medal match.  Eric Morris, Fox Baldwin and Nick Corba were dominating champions. Chandler Strand gave a very gutty performance in capturing a well balanced weight class.”

Corba was a FILA Cadet Nationals runner-up this year in Akron, Ohio.

Winning silver medals for the USA team were:
• Tanner Cox, Springville, Utah at 42 kg/92.5 lbs.
• Carter Shipley, Windermere, Fla. at 100 kg/220 lbs.

Cox was a FILA Cadet Nationals runner-up this year in Akron, Ohio.

“It was certainly a team-first mentality by every member of Team USA in defeating a spirited team from host country,” said Hampton.

Coaching the U.S. team were  Jim Martinez of Chandler, Ariz., Mark Morris of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Fred Stroker of Davenport, Iowa.
