High School Wrestler of the Week: Mike Pirozolla, Levittown, Pa.
Pirozolla, who competes for Neshaminy High School, won the gold medal at 145 pounds at the Pennsylvania Class AAA State Wrestling Championships, held in Hershey, Pa., March 10-11. It was his second career state title, to go along with two silver medals (as a freshman and sophomore). Pirozolla crushed his opposition, scoring two pins and two major decisions. He pinned Keith Kleckner of Pottsville in 2:47 in the championship match. A senior, Pirozolla ends his career with a 141-7 record. He was fourth in the 1997 Cadet World Championships, and has made three U.S. age-group World teams.
College Wrestler of the Week: Kris Nelson, North Dakota State Univ.
Nelson won the 133-pound title and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA Div. II National Championships, held in Brookings, S.D., March 10-11. He was one of four individual champions for North Dakota State, which won the team title, placing 16 1/2 points ahead of runner-up Central Oklahoma. Nelson defeated Scott Braun of South Dakota State Univ. in the finals, 10-6, which clinched the team title for the Bison. Nelson won four matches on the way to the gold medal.
International Wrestler of the Week: Mike Mena, Iowa City Iowa (Hawkeye WC)
Mena won a gold medal at 119 pounds at the Freestyle Olympic Qualifying Tournament at Mexico City, Mexico, March 11-12. His victory scored eight points for the United States toward Olympic qualification, which helps place the USA in a strong position to qualify for the Olympics at the weight division. He dominated his rivals, pinning David Legrand of France and Xiande Zhou of China and scoring an 11-0 technical fall over Victor Gutierrez of Mexico in the semifinals. Mena won by injury default over Mikhail Japaridze of Canada in the gold-medal match. It was the most important international freestyle victory for Mena, who holds a No. 3 Team USA ranking.
