With 22 Cadet and Junior All-Americans in the mix for Saturday night’s Junior Freestyle Duals championship there definitely wasn’t a shortage of talent. But when 14 of those All-Americans sit on the Illinois bench, the end result is more of the same. Team Illinois won 11 of 15 bouts to beat Iowa Blue 36-22 on Saturday at Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, Okla., to win the state’s third consecutive freestyle championship at the Junior Duals. Illinois won five of the six team championships over the past month, claiming Schoolboy titles in both styles in Indiana and a Cadet Greco-Roman championship in Florida two weeks ago. Despite dropping only four matches and just four individual bouts going the full three periods, the Iowa squad battled and didn’t roll over for the Illinois juggernaut. Illinois opened the dual with back-to-back wins by the Moody brothers. Jabari, a Cadet freestyle champion, topped Nolan Hellickson 5-3, 4-3 at 100 pounds, while Nkosi, a double champion in Juniors last year, shook off a disappointing tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tanner Rohweder at 106 pounds. Moody had lost three times in the tournament before his resounding victory to put Illinois up 6-2 after two bouts. Tommy Pawelski, the runner-up to Nkosi in last year’s Junior Nationals, kept Illinois rolling, beating Kaz Oono at 113 pounds by a 3-1, 7-1 decision. The first matchup of All-Americans went Iowa’s way as Dylan Peters topped Sebastian Pique 1-0, 8-0 at 120 pounds. Peters won the first period on a pushout, then after scoring a second-period takedown, rattled off a series of gutwrenches to end the second quickly. The dual’s biggest individual match came at 126 pounds, where Illinois’ Jared Cortez, a Cadet champion in 2010 and Junior All-American last year, topped University of Iowa signee Cory Clark 2-1, 1-0. Cortez countered a Clark single leg attempt in the first period and rolled the attack through for two points and won the second period scoring from the leg clinch. Cortez’s victory gave Illinois a 12-7 lead. Two more of Illinois’ hammers prevailed at 132 and 138 as Zane Richards topped Iowa State signee Dakota Bauer 2-3, 1-0, 4-2 and Bryce Brill shutout Kyle Larson 4-0, 6-0. Richards is the reigning Junior champion, while Brill was a Cadet runner-up in 2010. Larson was fourth at Juniors last year. Iowa would pick up a second victory at 145 pounds as Connor Ryan topped Keith Moylan 2-0, 2-1 to bring Iowa within 19-11. Brian Murphy, last year’s Junior runner-up topped Iowan Jake Marlin, a Cadet All-American 5-0, 2-1 at 152 pounds. Iowa and Illinois would trade the next four bouts as Iowa’s Wisconsin signee Justin Koethe edged Northern Illinois signee Trace Engelkes in an exhaustive 5-0, 1-2, 4-4 victory at 160 pounds. Ricky Robertson picked up the win for Illinois at 171 pounds, topping Zeb Wahle 0-1, 2-2, 4-0. Robertson used his length and funk to his advantage, catching Wahle on two separate occasions in a spladle. In a matchup of future Iowa Hawkeye teammates, Alex Meyer of Iowa got behind early to Illinois’ Sam Brooks, but Meyer recovered to pick up an impressive 5-3, 5-1 victory. Both were All-Americans last season. Taylor McGiffen, Brad Johnson and Josh Marchock would close out the dual for Illinois, picking up victories at 195, 220 and 285. McGiffen, a Campbell signee, topped Marcus Harrington 2-1, 7-0. Johnson topped fellow All-American Willie Miklus, a Missour signee, 0-7, 4-4, 4-2 at 220 and Stanford commit Marchok beat All-American Joe Scanlan 2-1, 2-0. Jabari Moody, Cortez, Richards, Brill, Robertson, McGiffen, Johnson and Marchok all finished the freestyle portion of the event undefeated for Illinois, while Iowa’s Ryan and Koethe went through the tournament unscathed.
