Willie Gadson, a popular wrestling coach in Iowa who was also an outstanding competitor during his career, has been battling Stage 4 Bone and Lung Cancer.

His friends in the Waterloo, Iowa community have organized a fundraising event on his behalf at the Isle Casino Hotel Ballroom in Waterloo on Saturday, June 30. It will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 12:00 midnight.

The event is entitled: Battle 4 Gadson, “can’t keep a good man down”

From 6:30-8:30 p.m., there will be a silent auction and guest speakers. From 9:00 p.m. – midnight, there will be a band playing and dancing, along with the other activities at the casino. 

Also among the highlights will be appetizers and a cash bar, as well as numerous wrestling dignitaries from across the nation

Those attending the Gadson fundraiser will get free entry.

Gadson attended high school on Long Island, N.Y., competing for powerhouse Huntington High School. He went to Iowa State, where he was a two-time All-American for the Cyclones at 177 pounds, placing third in 1975 and sixth in 1976. Gadson, along with his brother Charlie, also had a successful freestyle career.

Gadson has also been a successful coach at many levels. He is currently head coach at Waterloo East High School. His son Kyven competes for Iowa State.

According to KWWL TV, Gadson initially lost 60 pounds from the illness, but has regained weight and strength. The report indicates that he has been responding to his treatment from Covenant Cancer Treatment Center and the Mayo Clinic.

Funds raised will help offset the tremendous medical costs associated with his battle against the cancer.
