Former Virginia Tech wrestler and NCAA All-American David Hoffman returns to his alma to join the Hokie wrestling staff after six successful seasons at Bucknell University, as announced Monday by the Virginia Tech Athletics Department. Hoffman will help coach the lower weights, assist in recruiting and other various duties with the staff.

Hoffman coached for six seasons with the Bison, including five as Dan Wirnsberger’s top assistant. Hoffman earned the promotion after he spent his first season with the Orange and Blue coaching the varsity lightweights and helping guide 133-pounder David Marble to an appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2007. His work with Marble and the other lightweights continued and Marble earned his fourth consecutive NCAA Championship berth in 2010. Additionally, 149-pound 2010 graduate Kevin LeValley was a three-time NCAA qualifier and a two-time All-American.

“I’m really excited to be back at my alma mater,” Hoffman said. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to come back to Blacksburg to work with Coach [Kevin] Dresser and [Tony] Robie. This program has advanced to new heights and I hope to continue the recent success we’ve had here and take this program to a consistent top-10 level. I’m excited to be able to work with group of talented wrestlers to like Jarrod Garnett, Devin Carter, Zach Neibert, Nick Brascetta and Erik Spjut, a group of NCAA qualifiers who have the ability to place high on the podium at NCAAs.”

Hoffman, a Spring City, Pa., native, graduated from Virginia Tech in 2006 with a degree in health and physical education and was a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier on the mat. In 2006 as a senior, Hoffman picked up a dramatic, last-second win over fifth-seeded Josh Churella of Michigan with a takedown at the buzzer to earn All-America honors as a senior, en route to an eighth-place finish. During his career with the Hokies, Hoffman compiled a record of 116-32, including 19 major decisions, five technical falls and 38 pins. He also earned Freshman All-America honors from Amateur Wrestling News in 2002 and was a three-time captain of the Hokies’ squad.

At The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., Hoffman was a five-time prep All-American, two-time prep national champion and one of only two wrestlers in school history to achieve All-America status five times. He posted a record of 195-17 in his prep school career.

Hoffman replaces former assistant Nate Yetzer, who was hired as head coach for a new wrestling program at Ferrum (Va.) College.
