Army wins the 2000 Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championship with four individual champions, March 17 

The U.S. Army won all three of its dual meets to win the team title at the 2000 Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championships at the Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Pensacola, Fla., March 17.

The U.S. Army defended its team title with wins over the U.S. Navy, 29-1, the U.S. Air Force, 20-9, and the U.S. Marine Corps, 16-14.

The U.S. Marine Corps placed second in the team race with a 2-1 team record, scoring team victories over the U.S. Air Force, 16-15, and the U.S. Navy, 24-8. The U.S. Air Force was 1-2 and finished in third place as a team, and the U.S. Navy was fourth with an 0-3 record.

The Army had the most individual champions with four, including Mujaahid Maynard at 127.75 pounds, Glenn Nieradka at 138.75 pounds, Shon Lewis at 152 pounds and Dremiel Byers at 286 pounds.

The Marine Corps had two individual champions: Jacob Clark at 167.5 pounds and Dan Hicks at 213.75 pounds.

The Air Force also had two individual champion: Jeff Cervone at 119 pounds and Aaron Sieracki at 187.25 pounds.

The U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force teams are stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo., while the U.S. Navy team is stationed in Pensacola, Fla. and the U.S. Marine Corps team is stationed in Quantico, Va.

The U.S. Army won both the freestyle and the Greco-Roman competition at the 1999 Armed Forces Wrestling Championship, which was held at the Post Field House in Fort Carson, Colo.

Champions in the Greco-Roman division qualify for the Challenge Tournament at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24. Th

is is the first qualifying event for the 2000 Olympic Trials. The freestyle competition will be held on Saturday, March 18, with sessions held at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Awards will be presented mat side after every other weight class for both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
