SIEDICE, Poland – The United States won two gold medals on the final day of the Ziolkowski International on Sunday.

Capturing gold medals were Logan Stieber (Monroeville, Ohio/New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Both train at the Ohio Regional Training Center.

Stieber, a 2012 NCAA champion for Ohio State and a 2011 Junior World silver medalist, defeated Munir Recep Aktas of Turkey in the finals with a second period fall. Aktas is considered Turkey’s top athlete at the weight class, a runner-up at the Olympic Test Event in London in December 2011.

He opened the tournament with a 6-0, 2-0 victory over Nikolay Noev of Tajikistan in the semifinals.

Bergman, a member of the 2010 U.S. World Team, went 4-0 on the day. His gold-medal victory came over 2011 World silver medalist Serhat Balci of Turkey, 1-0, 1-0.

Other victories by Bergman were over Kamil Skaskiewicz of Poland, 1-0, 1-0, Kamil Wojciechowski of Poland, 7-0, 6-0 and Jozef Jaloviar of Slovakia, 0-1, 4-0, 4-0.

The other U.S. competitor on Sunday, Trent Paulson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) finished seventh at 74 kg/163 lbs. with a 1-1 record.

The U.S. placed second in the team standings with 63 points and six medalists. Turkey edged the USA for the team title with 67 points. Kazakhstan was third with 60 pts.

The USA had four champions: Stieber and Bergman, plus Saturday winners Obe Blanc at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Tervel Dlagnev at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Winning a silver medal was Angel Escobedo at 55 kg/121 lbs. and taking a bronze medal was Jarod Trice at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

“The USA team wrestled well here in Poland, with four champs, a second and a third. I was glad to see us beat some of Turkey’s  No. 1 guys. It is a sign that we are improving as a country. I was pleased to see our team compete hard and understand the standard the US has set,” said U.S. coach Lou Rosselli.
