DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Winning 11 of the 17 bouts in the championship dual meet, Illinois won the Greco-Roman title at the Cadet National Duals today.

Illinois defended as the Cadet National Dual champions, after winning both styles at last year’s Cadet National Duals.

It was also the third straight National Duals title for Illinois this month, after Illinois swept both styles at the 2012 Schoolboy National Duals in Indiana last week.

Illinois opened the event with a win at 88 pounds by Louie Hayes, but Minnesota took the next three lightweight matches for an early 10-5 lead. Winning bouts for Minnesota were Paul Fitterer (94), Austin Anderly (100) and Mitchell McKee (106).

Illinois won four of the next five matches to take a lead it would never relinquish. Kegal Calkins (113), Jonathan Marmolejo (120), Isaia White (126) and Joey Gunther (138) helped Illinois develop that lead. Marmolejo was a Cadet Greco-Roman All-American last year in Fargo, N.D.

The big hammer came in the upper weights, where Illinois won six of the final seven matches in the dual meet. Xavier Montalvo scored a pin at 152 pounds, and technical falls came from Alex Benoit at 170 pounds and Tanner Farmer at 285 pounds. Montalvo was an All-American at last year’s Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman.

Illinois reached the Championship Pool by winning Pool C, while Minnesota reached the Championship Pool with a victory in Pool D. The other Pool winners were Florida Red in Pool B, and New Jersey in Pool A.

New Jersey placed third, with a 43-25 victory over Florida Red in their medal match. Michigan Blue was fifth, a 45-26 winner over Texas. The seventh place match was decided with a pin at 285 pounds by Xyah Ra of Missouri, giving Missouri a razor-thin 34-33 victory over Idaho Blue.

The All-Tournament Team will be announced when received.
