USA wins Junior Pan Ams in freestyle and Greco-Roman and takes second in women’s freestyle

PETEN, Guatemala – The United States had a strong showing in all three styles at the 2012 Pan American Junior Championships, held June 6-9. The event featured athletes who are between 17-20 years old from the nations in North America, Central America and South America.

The USA won the team title in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman and placed second in the team standings in women’s freestyle.

Overall, the United States won seven gold medals and 17 medals in the three Olympic styles.

In men’s freestyle, the USA won four gold medals and six total medals. The USA was tied with Venezuela with 63 points, but got the title with the most individual champions with four.

Claiming gold medals in men’s freestyle were
• Nick Moore, Iowa City, Iowa (Hawkeye WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.
• Dwight Howes, Denver, Colo. (OTC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.
• Scott Schiller, Fargo, N.D. (Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
• Connor Medbury, Loveland, Colo. (Badger WC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Moore attends the Univ. of Iowa, Schiller goes to Minnesota and Medbury wrestles for Wisconsin. Howe, a graduated high school senior, trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

In Greco-Roman, the USA had five medalists, but no individual champions. Included were one silver medal and four bronze medals.

The U.S. scored the most team points in Greco-Roman with 57 points, followed by Venezuela with 51 points.

In women’s freestyle, the United State came home with three individual champions and six medalists.

Winning gold medals in women’s freestyle were:
• Kayla Bartosch, Triangle, Va. (King College) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.
• Rachel McFarland, Dewitt, Mich. (Gator WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
• Amanda Hendey, Beaumont, Calif. (King College) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.

Bartosch and Hendey attend King College. McFarland is a graduated senior and has signed with Oklahoma City Univ.

On the two U.S. men’s teams, all of the athletes except at one weight class doubled up and competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Of these athletes, four American wrestlers won two medals. They were:
• Ramon Moreno, Miami Lakes, Fla. (USOEC), with a silver medal in both Greco-Roman and freestyle
• Dwight Howes, Denver, Colo. (OTC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. with a freestyle gold medal and Greco-Roman bronze medal.
• Scott Schiller, Fargo, N.D. (Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. with a freestyle gold medal and Greco-Roman bronze medal
• Connor Medbury, Loveland, Colo. (Badger WC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. with a freestyle gold medal and a Greco-Roman bronze medal
