Four-time state champions Jimmy Gulibon (126) of Derry (Pa.) High and Taylor Massa (170) of St. Johns (Mich.) High and two-time National Prep champion Brooks Black (285) of Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy were selected to the First Team for the second consecutive year as the 27th annual ASICS All-America Wrestling Team was announced. Zahid Valencia (106) of Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco High made some history of his own, becoming the first freshman to be named to the First Team in its 27-year history. Led by Valencia, who completed a spectacular season with a state championship, seven underclassmen were selected to the First Team, second only to the eight underclassmen selected in 2009. The First Team has combined for 38 state or National Prep championships. Joining Gulibon and Massa as four-time champions were Mark Grey (132) of Blair Academy, a four-time National Prep champion, and Jason Tsirtsis (145) of Crown Point (Ind.) High. All four are seniors. The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible. ASICS is a title sponsor of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Fargo Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels. “This team represents the best of the best in our schools today,†said Neil Duncan and Nick Gallo of ASICS and TW Promotions, Inc. “We are proud to have these young men, with their talent and work ethic, representing us. They are clearly the World and Olympic champions of the future.†Members of the First Team, as well as the ASICS Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior National Freestyle Championships in July at Fargo, N.D. The ASICS All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes – the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. Wrestlers are considered at the weight class at which they competed in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year. In addition to their 38 scholastic titles, the 14 First Team members also combined to post seven Junior National and 20 Cadet National titles. The Second and Third Teams rival the First Team. The Second Team, actually the most decorated at the state level with 41 state titles, includes a five-time champion and three four-time champions to go with four Junior National and four Cadet National titles. The Third Team (33 titles) also boasts three four-time champions, along with two Junior National and four Cadet National crowns. One of four states with multiple First Team selections, Ohio led all states with three: juniors Nathan Tomasello (113) of Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and Bo Jordan (152) of St. Paris Graham High, both three-time state champions, and senior George DiCamillo (120) of Cleveland St. Ignatius High, a two-time state champion. Blair Academy and St. Johns each had two First Team selections. Joining Massa on the First Team was junior Ben Whitford (138), who returned to his hometown school to win his first Michigan title at 140 (Michigan did not adopt the new National Federation weight classes this year) after winning a pair of Illinois titles at Aurora Marmion Academy. Pennsylvania also had two selections, Gulibon and sophomore Chance Marsteller (160) of Fawn Grove Kennard Dale High. Completing the First Team: seniors Jordan Rogers (182) of Spokane (Wash.) Mead High and Devin Peterson (195) of Wisconsin Rapids (Wis.) Lincoln High and sophomore Kyle Snyder (220) of Olney (Md.) Good Counsel High. A total of 10 high schools had multiple wrestlers selected. Blair Academy had five overall selections, led by First Team members Grey and Black, and Whitford and Massa made St. Johns one of six schools with three overall selections. A pair of Ohio schools, Graham and Lakewood St. Edward High, also had three, along with Brandon (Fla.) High, Christiansburg (Va.) High and Runnells (Iowa) Southeast Polk High. Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic High and Lockport (Ill.) High each had two selections. Pennsylvania placed 19 wrestlers on the squad, Ohio 16 and Illinois 12 to lead all states. Pennsylvania placed nine on the top three teams, and California and Ohio had five each. Iowa and New Jersey each had eight overall selections, California seven, Michigan six and Florida, Indiana and Minnesota five each. The 112 wrestlers selected come from 23 states. 2012 ASICS ALL AMERICA TEAM First Team 106 - Zahid Valencia, Fr, St. John Bosco HS, Bellflower, CA 113 - Nathan Tomasello, Jr, Cuyuhoga Valley Christian Academy, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 120 - George DiCamillo, Sr, St. Ignatius HS, Cleveland, OH 126 - Jimmy Gulibon*, Sr, Derry HS, Derry, PA 132 - Mark Grey, Sr, Blair Academy, Blairstown Township, NJ 138 - Ben Whitford, Jr, St. Johns HS, St. Johns, MI 145 - Jason Tsirtsis, Sr. Crown Point HS, Crown Point, IN 152 - Bo Jordan, Jr, Graham HS, St. Paris, OH 160 - Chance Marsteller, So, Kennard Dale HS, Fawn Grove, PA 170 - Taylor Massa*, Sr, St. Johns HS, St. Johns, MI 182 - Jordan Rogers, Sr, Mead HS, Spokane, WA 195 - Devin Peterson, Sr, Lincoln HS, Wisconsin Rapids, WI 220 - Kyle Snyder, So, Good Counsel HS, Olney, MD 285 - Brooks Black*, Jr, Blair Academy, Blairstown Township, NJ * - denotes repeat selection Second Team 106 Darian Cruz Jr Beth.
