In consecutive bouts, the USA fell to China, 6-1, lost to Japan 5-2 and dropped a 4-3 dual meet to Ukraine. The U.S. opened against two-time defending World Cup champion China. The only U.S. winner was 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. In the dual meet against World champion Japan, U.S. winners were Leigh Jaynes (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and 2011 World bronze medalist Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. In a rematch of the 2010 World finals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., World and Olympic champion Kaori Icho of Japan edged Elena Pirozhkova of the USA, 1-0, 2-2, 2-0. Against Ukraine, all three U.S. Olympians in the lineup won their matches, Campbell, Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Chun was a 2008 World champion and Pirozhkova was a 2010 World silver medalist. Campbell was the only U.S. wrestler to win two matches on Saturday. By placing fourth in its pool, the USA will compete in the seventh place match on Sunday against Azerbaijan, which was 0-3 in Pool B. The championship finals will be a match between Japan and Russia. The third place match will feature China and Canada. Fifth place will be decided between Ukraine and Mongolia.
