The Kuaai Interscholastic Federation has agreed to offer wrestling as a regular sport for the school year of 2012-2013, dependent on the community reaching certain fundraising goals. 

Kauai’s three public schools remain the only public school that don’t offer wrestling to their students, while most private and charters schools in Hawaii offer wrestling. If the KIF sanctions wrestling, all high school  students on Kauai, public, private, charter and home school, will have the opportunity to participate in wrestling. 

At this year’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials, two of the four spots on the women’s team went to Hawaii girls. Moanalua’s Stephany Lee and Roosevelt high’s Clarissa Chun will represent the U.S. at the London Games. Each year high school students throughout Hawaii earn college scholarships in wrestling and Kauai’s youth will be given the same opportunity if the fundraising goal is met. 

Representative Derek Kawakami has brokered a deal combining government funding and community fundraising to provide the necessary budget for KIF Wrestling. However, time is running out and fundraising is short of their goal. 

The community has until May 21to raise an additional $7,000 to reach the goal of $20,000. To help establish scholastic wrestling on Kauai see information below:
