USA Wrestling has been notified by FILA, the international wrestling federation, that Toby Erickson of East Helena, Montana has been awarded the bronze medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. from the 2011 FILA Junior World Championships in Bucharest, Romania.
Erickson had originally placed fifth in the competition at that weight class.
FILA has confirmed that Babak Dezhbani of Iran, who was awarded the silver medal at 120 kg in Bucharest, had tested positive in doping. FILA has stripped the media from Dezhbani and adjusted the final individual standings.
Dezhbani had defeated Erickson in their opening bout, 3-0, 1-0. When Dezhbani reached the finals, Erickson was drawn back into the repechage. Erickson defeated Wenqui Wu of China, then dropped a bronze medal match to Kiryl Hryschanka of Belarus.
Hryschanka, who also lost a match to Dezhbani, moved up from third place to receive the silver medal at the competition.
With the change in team points awarded to Erickson, USA Wrestling has calculated that the USA has moved up from 14th place to the 11th place position in the team standings.
Erickson is currently a student at Northern Michigan, where he competes with the USOEC Greco-Roman program there. He previously attended and competed for Boise State. Erickson placed fourth at the 2012 U.S. Open and will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa this weekend.
