Dennis Hall is entering the U.S. Olympic Team Trials with the same mindset that landed him a spot in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

“I want to win another Olympic medal,” Hall said Monday afternoon. “Why else would I do it? I plan on making the Olympic Team and representing the United States in London.”

The 41-year-old Hall, a past World champion and Olympic silver medalist, said he plans to compete at 60 kg/132 lbs. at the Olympic Trials on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.

Hall is looking to become just the third American to make four Olympic Teams in wrestling. He made U.S. Olympic Teams in 1992, 1996 and 2004.

Hall captured an Olympic silver medal in 1996. He won a World bronze medal in 1994 before winning a World title in 1995.

Hall last competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, but has continued to wrestle while coaching and working with young wrestlers.

“I have always been on the mat since 2004,” Hall said. “I’ve been thinking about coming back the last three years after the rules changed. The rules they have now fit my style. I like the pushout rule – guys can’t run. I like the format where you wrestle all the matches in one day. You can catch a guy when he is tired.”

Hall said he started training for the Trials in February. He works out with the college wresters in Stevens Point. He also has trained with top U.S. wrestler Nate Engel and also spent time working with two-time World bronze medalist Justin Lester.

“I will just wrestle the same way I’ve always wrestled,” Hall said. “I will get after it. I will wrestle aggressively and stay in my opponent’s face. And I will look to score on my feet like I always have.”

Hall said he has the full support of his family in making a comeback. He and his wife, Chrissy, have three sons and a daughter. His son Tyler is 15, Brandon is 10 and Jake is 6. They all wrestle. His daughter, Alyssa, is 5.

“My family is really excited about this,” Hall said. “The kids are happy to go on a trip and stay in a hotel. They think it’s cool that their dad is going to wrestle. They are all asking me if they get to go to London for the Olympics if I make it. They will all be going if I make the Olympic Team. It’s great for my boys, to see what it takes by watching me wrestle.”

Hall said he is on track to make 60 kilos for the tournament.

“I stepped on the scale and I’m only five-and-a-half pounds over,” he said. “My weight’s good. I definitely feel like I’m ready to go.”

Hall was asked if he was concerned about not having competed in almost eight years.

“You don’t forget how to wrestle,” he said. “Once the whistle blows, the mind and body will take over. I’m ready to go. I’m excited. I can’t wait to get out there and compete.”

Hall said he is sure there are people who are skeptical of his comeback at age 41.

“Everyone is going to look at me like I’m a raving lunatic because of my age,” Hall said. “A lot of people probably think I’m crazy, but I feel like giving this another shot. I know I won’t have any regrets when I’m 50-something now. I want to compete and I want to get the job done.”
