Two years ago, Isaiah Varona had a conversation with his dad about having Olympic aspirations. His father told him he could do anything.

In the past three weeks, Varona, set to graduate from South Dade High School in Homestead, Fla., qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and won the FILA Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman.

He'll join former high school teammates Kendrick Sanders and Earl Hall at next week's Olympic Trials in Iowa City.

Varona topped Jake Bellis in the finals at 55kg/121 pounds for his second title in three weeks at the Alliant Energy Center Convention Hall in Madison, Wis., on Sunday.

Varona, needed to score in par terre in the final 30 seconds of the third period, locked up a gutwrench and turned Bellis twice in the final half minute to seal the victory.

California native and current Indiana Hoosier Lucas Sheridan was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after picking up a dominant 7-1, 2-0 win over Maryland’s Anthony Gardner at 84kg. Gardner was a surprise finalist after beating U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier Lee Wildes of the USOEC in the semifinals.

Alvarez wasn’t the lone Florida champion as Nick Alvarez (66kg/145.5 pounds) and Geordan Speiller (79kg/174 pounds) claimed championships for the Sunshine State and the Southeast Regional Training Center.

Alvarez topped Wisconsin’s Ryne Cokeley 4-2, 6-4 while Speiller beat YES Wrestling’s Terrance Zaleski 1-0, 5-0. Alvarez, also representing the USOEC at Northern Michigan, was one of three USOEC-based wrestlers, joining Varona, who has been training in Marquette, Mich., the last four weeks, Joey DeNova, who won at 60kg and Marcus Finau at 96kg.

DeNova topped Jessy Williams of the USOEC 3-0, 1-0, while Finau bested Army’s Austin Schafer in three periods.

Caleb Smith at 74kg and Adam Coon at 120kg were the other winners of the Olympic weight classes.

Coon, a Cadet World Champion in freestyle from Michigan, topped last year’s Junior National Greco champion Parker Betts of the Minnesota Storm and USOEC 1-0, 8-4 at heavyweight.

Tyler Fraley of Wyoming Seminary and the Shamrock Wrestling Club won one of the four non-Olympic weights, claiming the title at 63kg with a win over another Shamrock, Tyrel White. Bobby Nachreiner of Askren Wrestling Academy won at 50kg, a Junior-level sponsored weight class, Brad Dolezal of Minnesota won at 70kg and Speiller at 79.
