CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The U.S. Olympic Team Trials field is nearly complete following the Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle portions of the Final Olympic Trials Qualifier on Sunday at the UNI-Dome. Fourteen wrestlers in Greco-Roman and eight in women’s freestyle earned spots at the Olympic Trials, set for April 21-22 in Iowa City. The top two finishers in each weight class in Cedar Falls, who haven’t previously qualified, earned berths into the Olympic Trials. Champions crowned in Greco-Roman included Isaiah Varnona, Chad Vandiver, RaVaughn Perkins, Aaron Briggs, Travis Rutt, Lee Wildes and Robby Smith. Varona is just 18 years old and Wildes is 19. Varona downed Dmitry Ryabchinski 0-1, 1-0, 3-0 in the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. “I’m going to try to get as far as I can at the Trials,†Varona said. “This is an amazing opportunity for me. I still can’t believe I’ve gotten this far.†Smith recorded a first-period fall over Nicholas Severson in the finals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. “I’ve been out with an injury and this is my first tournament in 4½ months,†Smith said. “It is nice to get qualified for the Trials. I’m going to go down to 96 kilos for the Trials and hope we can get the weight class qualified overseas for the Olympics.†Champions crowned in the Olympic women’s freestyle weight classes included Candace Workman, Sharon Jacobson, Othella Feroleto and Amanda Hendey. “I felt really good,†said Jacobson, a past World Team member. “It was important to win this and it was a confidence-builder for me. I’m ready for the Trials.†Two-time World bronze medalist Justin Lester won his first three matches to reach the semifinals at 74 kg/163 lbs. Lester, looking to get a few matches in before the Olympic Trials, then withdrew from the tournament. Lester has already qualified for the Olympic Trials. 2008 Olympian and past World Team member T.C. Dantzler dropped a quarterfinal bout to Rutt, a past Junior World Team member, at 84 kg/185 lbs. Rutt won 2-0, 1-1, gaining a last-second takedown in the second period to clinch the victory. Dantzler, 41, has already qualified for the Olympic Trials. GRECO-ROMAN Finals results 55 kg/121 lbs.
