CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Aaron Pico isn’t even in high school yet. But the gifted young prospect from California already is making a huge impact on the national level in wrestling. Pico continued his run of success in USA Wrestling events, rolling to a 19-7 win over Mark Voss of Minnesota to capture a Cadet title at the ASICS Folkstyle Nationals on Saturday at the McLeod Center. Pico was among the 32 champions crowned in Folkstyle during the Cadet and Junior finals on Saturday. Pico, an eighth-grader, won Cadet Nationals titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle last summer in Fargo, N.D. Pico won three matches by fall and two other by major decision en route to winning in Cedar Falls. “I trained really hard for this,†Pico said. “Unfortunately last year I didn’t come to this tournament. That’s why we’re here this year. My goal is to win the Triple Crown. It’s extremely important to wrestle in all these events and wrestle all the styles.†2011 Junior Triple Crown winner Nkosi Moody of Illinois started his quest to become USA Wrestling’s first two-time Junior Triple Crown winner by winning the title at 106. Moody edged Skyler Petry of Minnesota 7-5 in overtime in the finals. “I just tried to stay focused and tried not to do anything that would cost me the match,†Moody said. “I’ve been in this situation before and I knew what I needed to do. It’s going to be tough to win another Triple Crown. I just need to keep putting in the work.†2011 Cadet World freestyle champion Adam Coon of Michigan continued his run of success by capturing a Junior title at 285 pounds. Coon recorded a pin over Wisconsin’s Cole Johnson in the finals. “Finally, it’s unbelievable to win this,†Coon said of winning his first Folkstyle Nationals title. “I absolutely love it. I have won previous national championships before, but this is absolutely fantastic. I’ve been runner-up a few times and was never able to win it. I’ve never been able to quite break through and finally I got it.†Oregon’s Ronnie Bresser edged Minnesota’s Tommy Thorn 6-3 in a 113-pound Juniors final in a battle of top standouts. Bresser and Thorn both won Cadet titles in this event last year before Thorn beat Bresser in the 2011 Cadet Nationals freestyle finals in Fargo. “This is a big tournament, and it’s a good win for me,†Bresser said. “He kept me from winning the Triple Crown last year. He’s a tough wrestler and a good opponent. It’s great to win this. It sets me up for freestyle and Greco in Fargo.†Alex Meyer of Iowa captured his second straight Junior title. Meyer, a University of Iowa recruit, won a championship at 170. Nebraska’s Colton Adams, a Cadet champion in this event last year, claimed a Junior title at 126 on Saturday. Adams, a two-time state high school champion, edged Brock Ervin of Kentucky 3-2 in the finals. 2011 FILA Cadet National freestyle champion Oliver Pierce of Texas captured a Junior title at 152. Bo Nickal of Texas repeated as champion in the Cadet division after winning a title at 152. The Folkstyle Nationals will resume at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, with the Bantam, Intermediate, Novice and Schoolboy divisions completing competition.
