OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALIST GHAFFARI AND OLYMPIAN MAYNARD ARE GRECO-ROMAN WINNERS AT SOUTH REGIONAL OLYMPIC TRIALS IN KENNER, LA., APRIL 7 

1996 Olympic silver medalist Matt Ghaffari (Avon Lake, Ohio/Sunkist Kids), and his Olympic teammate Mujaahid Maynard (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), were among the champions of the Greco-Roman competition at the South Regional Olympic Trials, held in Kenner, La., April 7

The winners at each weight class qualified for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24.

Ghaffari scored a technical fall over Phil Lanzatella (Holly, N.Y./New York AC), 11-0 in the finals at 286 pounds. Ghaffari, a two-time Olympian, boasts four career World-level medals.

Maynard, who wrestled at 105.5 pounds at the 1996 Olympic Games, defeated Joe Dansby (San Luis Obispo, Calif./Dave Schultz WC), 9-0 in the finals at 127.75 pounds. It was the second Olympic qualifying event title for Maynard, who also won a gold at the Armed Forces Championships in Pensacola, Fla.

Team USA member Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) claimed a gold medal at 187.25 pounds, stopping James Short (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 10-0 in the finals. Niebuhr holds a No. 3 ranking on the Greco-Roman national team.

Other individual champions were Michel Santos (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 119 pounds, Charley Carbaugh (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 138.75 pounds, Steve Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 152 pounds, Jeff Funicello (Mesa, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds and Dave Surofchek (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 213.75 pounds.

The freestyle competition at the South Regional Olympic Trials will be held on Saturday, April 8. The tournament is expected to conclude on Saturday, but will be extended to Sunday if the entry levels warrent.

USA Wrestling is hosting Regional Olympic Trials in five regions: West, East, South, Central and North. The West and East Regionals have already been completed.

The Central Regional Olympic Trials are scheduled for Tulsa, Okla., April 27-29. The competition will be held at Union Intermediate School. For information, contact Archie Randall at 405-354-5417.
