Steiner twins, Sanderson among FS champs at South Regional Olympic Trials

TROY AND TERRY STEINER, SANDERSON, VAN ARDALE ARE FREESTYLE WINNERS AT SOUTH REGIONAL OLYMPIC TRIALS IN KENNER, LA., APRIL 8 

The Steiner twins, Troy (Madison Wis./Team Excel) and Terry (Madison, Wis., Team Excel) were among the champions of the Greco-Roman competition at the South Regional Olympic Trials, held in Kenner, La., April 8.

The winners at each weight class qualified for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24.

Troy claimed the 138.75-pound title, defeating Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) in the finals by injury default. Terry was the 152-pound champion, stopping Ramico Blackmon (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Excel) in the finals, 5-4. The brothers, who work as wrestling coaches for the Univ. of Wisconsin, were NCAA champions for the Univ. of Iowa.

Cael Sanderson (Heber City, Utah/Sunkist Kids), a two-time NCAA champion for Iowa State Univ., claimed the 187.25-pound title, pinning Ken Bigley (New York, N.Y./NYAC), in 55 seconds in the finals. Sanderson, a sophomore, is undefeated in his college career, and is also a talented freestyler.

Another former Iowa State NCAA champion, Mike Van Arsdale (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) claimed the 213.75 pound title. Van Arsdale pinned Chad Lamer (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) in 2:25 in the finals. Van Arsdale was second in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Other individual champions were Tim Dernlan (Columbus, Ohio/Ohio International) at 119 pounds, Jason Kutz (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 127.75 pounds, Kenny Ramsey (Columbus, Ohio/Ohio International) at 167.5 pounds and Angelo Borzio (East Stroudsburg, Pa./New York AC) at 286 pounds.

USA Wrestling is hosting Regional Olympic Trials in five regions: West, East, South, Central and North. The West and East Regionals have already been completed.

The Central Regional Olympic Trials are scheduled for Tulsa, Okla., April 27-29. The competition will be held at Union Intermediate School. For information, contact Archie Randall at 405-354-5417.
