The winner of TheMat.com Youth Wrestler of the Week is Nate Gallick of Tucson, Ariz.
The winner of TheMat.com Junior Wrestler of the Week is Leslie Morrow of Canton, Ga.
The winner of TheMat.com FILA Junior/University Wrestler of the Week is Teague Moore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sunkist Kids).
The winner of TheMat.com International Wrestler of the Week is Cael Sanderson (Heber City, Utah/Sunkist Kids).
The winner of TheMat.com Women's Wrestler of the Week is Tina George-Wilson, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids).
TheMat.com will announce Wrestlers of the Week in a number of age group levels, which will be posted on the web page and promoted to the national media.
Youth Wrestler of the Week: Nate Gallick, Tucson, Ariz.
Gallick was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the 2000 FILA Cadet Freestyle National Championships at Evanston, Ill., April 9. Gallick scored a decision over Shawn Bunch of Leavenworth, Kan., 5-1, in the gold-medal match at 119 pounds. Gallick also placed third at the 2000 FILA Cadet Greco-Roman championships just two days prior to the freestyle competition.
Junior Wrestler of the Week: Leslie Morrow, Canton, Ga.
Morrow won the 123-pound title and was named Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman at the Southeast Junior Regionals in New Orleans, La., April 7. Morrow pinned Joseph Mavins of South Carolina in the gold-medal finals in 1:32. He also placed second in the Southeast Regionals in freestyle, losing only to Matt Keller of Tennessee in the championship finals, 10-7.
FILA Junior/University Wrestler of the Week: Teague Moore, Pittsburgh, Pa. (Sunkist Kids)
Moore claimed the 119-pound title and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the University National Freestyle Championships in Evanston, Ill., April 8-9. Moore defeated Stephen Abas of the Sunkist Kids in a close 3-1 overtime win in the gold-medal finals. Moore, a former NCAA champion from Oklahoma State, won five matches, including three technical falls and a pin.
International Wrestler of the Week: Cael Sanderson, Heber City, Utah (Sunkist Kids)
Sanderson claimed a gold medal at 187.25 pounds in the South Regional Olympic Trials, held in New Orleans, La., April 8. The victory qualified Sanderson for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24. Sanderson pinned Ken Bigley of the New York AC in the championship finals in 55 seconds. He won four matches, including two technical falls and a pin. Sanderson, a college sophomore, is a two-time NCAA champion from Iowa State.
Women's Wrestler of the Week: Tina George-Wilson, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids)
George-Wilson won the 123.25-pound title and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Women's University National Championships, held in Evanston, Ill., April 9. George-Wilson defeated Carrie Birge of the Viking WC in the championship finals by a 13-3 technical fall. She also stopped Malissa Sherwood of the Dave Schultz WC in the in the semifinals, 8-6. George-Wilson avenged losses to both Birge and Sherwood at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in February.
TheMat.com is "The Ultimate Source for Real Wrestling." It is being developed into the official web page of the Amateur Wrestling Alliance, which includes USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. The soft launch of the new page page is expected in April.
