COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It was a dominating finish to a superb tournament for the U.S. freestyle team.

The powerful American squad crowned six champions as it decimated the field in winning the Pan American Championships on Sunday night at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Americans Sam Hazewinkel, Phillip Simpson, Trent Paulson, Raymond Jordan, Dustin Kilgore and Tervel Dlagnev each captured gold medals in freestyle.

The U.S. team went a combined 19-2 in Sunday’s tournament.

Hazewinkel swept Canada’s Jacob Hergenhein 2-0, 3-0 in the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. Hazewinkel won his first Pan American Championships title after previously placing second and third in this event.

“It feels great,” Hazewinkel said. “It was good day. I had my energy up and it was good to get down to 121 before the Olympic Trials.”

Simpson capped a superb day by driving Elvis Fuentes Blanco of Venezuela to his back and recording a first-period fall in the finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Simpson won his first title in this event.

“I was focused,” Simpson said. “I came out ready to wrestle and wrestled hard. I felt like I was going to get a pin for some reason and I went out and got it.”

Trent Paulson rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Brazil’s Daniel Alvares in the finals at 74 kg/163 lbs. Paulson, a past World Team member, scored takedowns in both periods followed by a succession of turns to win his first title in this event.

“I was looking to get my attacks going early,” Paulson said. “The coaches have been emphasizing hitting an attack in the first 5-10 seconds. I’ve been trying to implement that into my training.”

Jordan spun behind for a third-period takedown to defeat Cuba’s Luis Miranda Mazar 0-1, 1-0, 1-0 in the finals at 84 kg/185 lbs. Jordan won his first title in this event. Mazar placed third in the Cerro Pelado International earlier this month.

“The key was staying patient and to keep working,” Jordan said. “In the third period, my conditioning really paid off.”

Kilgore powered to a dominating 7-1, 7-1 win over Argentina’s Yuri Alexei Maier in the finals at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Kilgore won his first title in this event. Maier placed third in the 2011 Pan American Games.

“It was the same thing as every match,” Kilgore said. “I went out there with a real hard pace and looked for my shots. It worked well.”

Dlagnev crusied to a 6-0, 7-0 win over Canada’s Sunny Dhinsa in the finals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Dlagnev, a past World bronze medalist, beat the 18-year-old Dhinsa in the 2011 Pan American Games finals. Dlagnev won this event for the second time.

“Every match I’m getting better,” Dlagnev said. “I’m working on just perfecting some things. Everything is coming along very well.”

This is the final day of the three-day event.
