HAVANA, Cuba – Three U.S. athletes competed on the final day of the Granma Cup of Greco-Roman on Monday.

Placing fifth in their weight classes after dropping bronze-medal matches were Joe Betterman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Andy Bisek (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Betterman, a two-time U.S. World Team member, opened with a win over Ismael Borrero of Cuba, then fell in the semifinals to Hanser Meoque of Cuba. He was beaten in the bronze-medal match by Stig Andre Berge of Norway, 0-2, 0-1.

Bisek opened with a loss to Mayli Consuegra of Cuba. When Consuegra reached the finals, Bisek was pulled back into the repechage, where he beat American Ben Provisor in three periods. He was beaten by Alexei Bell of Cuba in the bronze-medal bout, 0-2, 0-1. Bisek was a member of the 2011 U.S. World Team.

Provisor (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) finished seventh with a 1-2 record.

The USA finished the tournament with three medalists, all from Sunday’s competition: silver medalist Jordan Holm (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and bronze medalists C.P. Schlatter (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Chas Betts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) at 84 kg/185 lbs.

“We need to take our destiny into our own hands and fight like our lives depend upon it, in every match and every period,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. “We need to use our American fighting attitude as a weapon when we begin our matches, not just when we are behind in the match.”
