ANKARA, Turkey – Three U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers finished with 2-2 records on Saturday, but fell short of the medal rounds at the Yasar Dogu International in Saturday. All three lost to opponents who reached the finals, qualifying them for the repechage rounds. They lost their second bout in the repechage rounds, one match shy of competing for a bronze medal. Two of these athletes finished seventh in their weight class: Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Keith Gavin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Scott opened with a win over Daolet Niyakbekov of Kazakhstan, a 2011 World bronze medalist at 55 kg. He followed with a win over Recep Topol of Turkey. In the quarterfinals, Scott was beaten by Alexander Bogomaev of Russia. Bogomaev was a medalist in the Ivan Yarygin Memorial in Russia the last two years at 55 kg, placing second in 2011 and third in 2012. In the repechage round, Scott lost to Ayal Anisimov of Russia, who was second in 2011 Dmitri Korkin International in Russia. Gavin opened with a win over Ali Dogan of Turkey, then was defeated by 2011 Turkish World Team member Serdar Boke of Turkey. In his first repechage match, Gavin defeated Bekir Demirtas of Turkey. He was beaten in his second repechage match by Maciej Balawender of Poland, who was second in the 2010 Military World Championships. Both U.S. heavyweights, 2008 U.S. Olympian Steve Mocco (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC) and 2010 U.S. World Team member Les Sigman (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC), lost to the same opponent, 2011 Junior World champion Jaber Sedeghzadeh of Iran. When Jaber Sedeghzadeh failed to reach the finals, the U.S. athletes were eliminated. Sigman won his first match, defeating Levan Seturidze of Georgia, and placed eighth in the final standings at 120 kg. Going 2-2 at 60 kg/132 lbs., but finishing out of the top 10, was Reece Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC). Humphrey, a 2011 U.S. World Team member, opened with a pair of wins, stopping Shogo Maeda of Japan and Vladimir Dubov of Bulgaria. In the quarterfinals, Humphrey was beaten by Recep Aktas of Turkey, who had placed second in the Olympic Test Event in London in December. Humphrey was eliminated in his first repechage match by Amandyk Bakeyev of Kazakhstan. The final day of competition is on Sunday, with competition at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
