175 athletes are now qualified to compete in Iowa City, April 21-22 A total of five additional athletes have qualified to compete at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, April 21-22. All of these wrestlers earned their spots in the field based upon results at 2012 Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 2-4. In men’s freestyle, the top U.S. athlete who placed in the top six in their weight class who had not already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials earned a spot in the field in Iowa City. The four new men’s freestyle qualifiers, all who are resident athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, include: • Earl Hall, Homestead, Fla. (New York AC), fourth at 55 kg/121 lbs. • Justin Pearch, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army), fourth at 60 kg/132 lbs. • Todd Meneely, Colorado Springs, Colo. (OTC), fourth at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. • Deron Winn, Liberty, Mo. (unattached), fifth at 84 kg/185 lbs. In three men’s freestyle weight classes, there were no Americans in the top six who had not already qualified. In Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle, any U.S. athlete who won a gold medal earned a spot in the Olympic Trials. Only one of the Dave Schultz Memorial Champions from the USA had not already qualified for Iowa City, which was in the Greco-Roman division: • Kendrick Sanders, Homestead, Fla. (New York AC/USOEC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. The new qualifiers have attended seven different college programs: Purdue (Sanders), Iowa (Meneely), Nebraska-Omaha (Meneely), Oregon (Pearch), St. Louis CC – Meramec (Winn), Northern Michigan (Sanders), North Idaho College (Pearch) Since the qualification process for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials began, 175 athletes have already earned their spot in this elite field. The qualification process will continue in the months leading up to the event. The approved Olympic Team Selection Criteria for each style can be read at: http://www.themat.com/usawrestling.org/nationalteams.php?page=team_criteria Each of the three Olympic styles of wrestling will have a different qualification process, as proposed by their individual Sports Committees, presented by USA Wrestling and approved by the USOC. The next opportunities to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials are a number of international wrestling competitions being held overseas in the next two months. Any athlete who wins a medal at one of these international competitions in both women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman who have not already qualified for the Olympic Trials will qualify for the event. The next domestic competition where athletes can qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials is the Women’s University Nationals in Oklahoma City, Okla., March In addition to listing the athletes by weight class, USA Wrestling is also producing a list of qualifiers based upon their college affiliation, either as a current or past student-athlete, current coach or involvement with a Regional Training Center. USA Wrestling will continue to update and publish the list of athletes who have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling.
