COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The return to competition by World champion Jordan Burroughs brought plenty of what you might expect.
Lots of leg attacks, lots of points and lots of frustrated opponents walking away in defeat.
Burroughs wrestled competitively for the first time in 3½ months and looked strong in breezing to the finals of the Dave Schultz Memorial International on Friday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Burroughs downed Tyler Caldwell 1-0, 1-0 in the semifinals at 74 kg/163 lbs. It was a rematch of the 2011 NCAA finals when Burroughs prevailed before going on his impressive freestyle run that culminated with a title at the 2011 Worlds in Turkey.
“I’m wrestling all right,†Burroughs said. “I’m not as sharp as I was in September, but I’m getting back to it. Some guys are using different tactics against me and trying to stay away. I just have to get my offense going and score more points.â€
Burroughs will battle 2009 World Team member Trent Paulson, a past NCAA champion, in the finals. The finals are set for 6 p.m. in Colorado Springs.
Burroughs, 23, opened with 1-0, 3-0 win over Japan's Kohei Kitamura before pinning Italy's Carmelo Lumia in the second round. He then downed past NCAA All-American Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov 5-1, 2-0 in the quarterfinals before beating Caldwell in the semis.
2010 World champion Sushil Kumar of India reached the finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. where he will face past NCAA runner-up Chase Pami.
